How We Help

Each year NRGH management presents the Auxiliary with a wish list of essential medical equipment and patient care and comfort items.

The list requested by the hospital falls into three categories:

  1. Individual Departmental Disbursements.
These are made to 18 different departments, to allow the departments discretion with minor funding needs.  For example, this is used by Dufferin Place to fund their music therapy program, and by Social Work department to perhaps provide a meal voucher to a needy patient.
  2. Care and Comfort Items.
These include items like breast pumps for the perinatal unit, stretcher chairs for the ER, or the provision of a public WiFi service throughout the hospital.  There are usually several dozen different items on this list.
  3. Capital Items.
These are major equipment purchases.  Generally, there are only one or two items each year that fall into this category, depending on their cost. These may be new or replacement equipment for the hospital or something that improves the comfort or well being of patients, but is not medical in nature – recently the Auxiliary funded the building of a Gathering Place room where patients, family and friends, of any faith or belief, can gather privately, in a spiritually calming environment, at times of great stress or sadness.  View video.

The Auxiliary membership, in consultation with the Board, approves the purchase of some or all items requested at a General Meeting, depending on the funds available.

Over the following year, Island Health, acquires these approved items and the Auxiliary pays the invoices.  There is close coordination on the use of funds between Island Health Finance and the Auxiliary Treasurer.

JUNIOR VOLUNTEER SCHOLORSHIPS, AWARDS & BURSARIES

For many years the Auxiliary has encouraged the concept of volunteering by school students at either the hospital (in the past these were known as candy stripers), at Auxiliary retail stores or another approved facility.  Each year the Auxiliary awards cash donations of between $500 and $3,000 to students who have:

  • Performed the requisite number of volunteer hours
  • Concrete plans to pursue further education
  • Achieved the required academic levels
